Porsche has announced its partnership with Multimatic to compete in the new hybrid racing class.
The prototypes built for racing by the companies will be used in the 2023 FIA World Endurance Championship WEC and the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The chassis designed by Multimatic will be the basis for the development of Porsche’s LMDh prototype. This car will also be used to participate in the classic endurance races held at Daytona, Sebring, and Le Mans as of 2023
There are specific regulations for the Le Mans Daytona hybrid (LMDh) category. It requires the chassis of all prototypes participating to be based on one of four approved manufacturers. These are Multimatic, Oreca, Dallara and Ligier. Audi will also base their contender on the Multimatic chassis.
“Multimatic is the most obvious and logical solution for us,” said Fritz Enzinger, Vice President Porsche Motorsport. “We have known this highly respected company and its team of experienced professionals for many years and are absolutely convinced of the quality of their work. We don’t have to set up a completely new business relationship with them, but can hit the ground running – that’s vital and is exactly what is needed when developing a new racing car” he added.
Multimatic has been a key Porsche Motorsport partner for many years. Recently, it supplied shock absorbers to the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. It also supplied suspension components to the company fro the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo. The Evo set a number of lap records on renowned circuits such as the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Multimatic also partnered with Porsche for the Porsche 99X Electric Formula E car and the 911 RSR in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
The LMDh category is new. It will be the top class at endurance races such as Le Mans, Daytona and Sebring as of 2023 while being all about cost-effectiveness. While regulations are tight, manufacturers are given the freedom to work with the powertrain systems. The engine can put out 680 PS while the bodyweight of the vehicle itself is specified at 1,030 kilograms.
