Mercedes-Benz will use a completely new bodyshell for the next AMG, the Mercedes AMG SL.
The German automaker will introduce a lightweight composite aluminum chassis that will improve the driving dynamics and comfort of the car.
The performance -spec sedan will combine the use of an aluminum space frame a self-supporting structure. The requirements for the structure demand a much wider scope of services to be put together.
The frame is light while ensuring a high torsional rigidity. Gullwing doors are back as the built is too high to accommodate regular doors.
The materials used prepare a fine combination of aluminum, steel, magnesium and fiber composites. This results in the high rigidity and a low weight. It gives room to accommodate comfort and safety features. Aluminum thrust panels on the underbody and function-integrated struts at the front and rear are a few examples of measures taken to achieve the best use of the materials employed.
“The development team in our bodyshell design area was faced with an extremely appealing, but also challenging task: when we were commissioned to undertake the overall development of the new SL, we started from scratch, so to speak, without building on any existing structure” Said Jochen Hermann, Chief Technical Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
“We can be justifiably proud of the result, which proves, once again, the high level of development competence in Affalterbach” he added.
The production of the new SL will take place at the automakers Bremen plant, the same place where its predecessor rolled out from.
